WOW! how moving, impressive, yes, actually, deeply spiritual, too, to "experience"
the total eclipse of the sun, in person.
An absolute must -- photos, videos,
you-tube, etc. simply are NO SUBSTITUTES.
I emphasis, "experience the event".
I pulled my pickup a few hundred yards off the interstate in southern Idaho, after a 500 mile,
but very scenic drive.
Along with, perhaps, a hundred other rag-tag folks in assorted RVs,
campers, trucks and cars.
Parking in the sage brush, I was quickly struck by this very
pleasant, strange, aroma - it was from the sage brush itself. It was very pleasant.
Along
with most folks I slept in my truck all night - Thankfully the seats recline nicely.
From about
10:15 am we all waited through the hour or so until 11:33 am as the partial eclipse progressed, occasionally watching
with our special eclipse glasses on.
Many folks had their special cameras, or at least, cell
phones, at the ready.
I noted what the handy dandy pamphlet I got at Walmart said.
The Sun is 400 times bigger than the Moon, but is also 400 times farther away.
So what
a marvelous extreme engineering miracle for God to make this beautiful situation.
And, then at
11:33 as the moon finally covered the last sliver of the sun's disk, the crowd literally erupted in cheers of joy
as the shimmering corona burst forth into full view!
Our part of the earth immediately, drastically, darkened,
somewhat like past dusk as one gets on to night .
We took off our glasses, the harmful
sun now completely hidden, to enjoy, may I say even, almost, worship, in the shimmering brilliance of the sun's
corona gloriously showing everywhere beyond the moon's disk.
Almost as though the corona
was alive in its shimmering, not dead-like as seen in photos.
I immediately saw Venus, I am sure
stars were visible also, but with only 2.5 minutes of "totality" I was rather transfixed on the brilliant corona,
and my other immediate surroundings.
There may have been bird noises too, but I recall only vaguely.
I'm already starting to plan for the next total solar eclipse, I believe, I've heard, 2024 in the USA.
I am so glad I was personally able to experience this one.
My love, awe, and dedication for
God and my realization of his greatness and goodness have grown a lot.
